Smothered in Green Chilies

Jason and I went to Santa Fe, NM this weekend with our friends Jen and Stephen. Jen, Stephen, and I went to celebrate our 30th birthdays and Jason came along to celebrate not being 40 yet.

We all hopped into the car for a classic road trip...I wish gas prices were more on the classic side too but it was still cheaper for us to drive than fly. We ended up staying at a great B&B called the Bobcat Inn. The innkeeper made us fresh breakfast with a Santa Fe flair every morning which we had on their beautiful porch.

We spent the days in Santa Fe touring the Plaza which is full of great restaurants, art galleries, and shops along with live music most nights. There are a lot of street vendors selling art, jewelry, and food which Jen and Stephen indulged in. All of the food in Santa Fe is great and there is plenty of it. Sure, there is a lot of southwest food where they use tons of green chilies but there are also Thai, Indian, Sushi, and French restaurants. The diversity surprised me.

We also visited Saint Francis Cathedral which is right off of the Plaza. Saint Francis is the patron saint of Santa Fe.

Later on, we spent some time looking at art from the Georgia O'Keefe museum which had a great exhibit on her work in relation to photography by Ansel Adams. To further round out our exposure to the arts, we did a tour of the Santa Fe Opera House which is world class and has singers from Europe perform regularly. We weren't able to get tickets to Marriage of Figaro which was playing this weekend because it was sold out but the tour gave us access to the backstage where we saw handmade costumes, wigs, actor's dressing rooms, rehearsal rooms, and props as tall as two stories....all for only $5!

Santa Fe is a great place to vacation for a long weekend. It is the perfect mix of activities and downtime. If you go, make sure you like green chilies....they put them on everything!
